travel-resources

Below are some of the travel resources that I use, enjoy, and recommend.

Where to Sleep

Air BnB  Stay with a local for a fraction of the price of a hotel!

Find Cheap Flights

The Points Guy  The best website for learning about points, miles, and travel discounts
Vayama  Great for last-minute deals.
Expedia  Ok everyone criticizes Expedia, but I’ve found some ridiculously cheap last minute and package deals on Expedia.
Monmodo  A different way of finding cheap flights.
Google Flights Find the cheapest departure dates and more.

Travel Blogging

Site Ground They’ve been hosting my blog for over a year without a single problem. They even help with customization.
Travel Blog Success Want to start a blog, wondering where to get started? TBS continues to be a valuable resource for me.

Travel Tech I Can’t Live Without

ASUS ZenBook I tried to love the MacBook, but I just couldn’t. I replaced it with a Zen Book. The Zen Book is the lightest coolest little laptop I’ve ever owned.
Nikon D3300 and Nikon 70-300 mm Zoom Lens This entry-level DSLR is lightweight and takes awesome photos. It also comes in red! I recently switched from a Canon, and really love this little camera.
Apple iPad mini 4 (16GB, Wi-Fi, Space Gray)This iPad mini has been with me on every trip in the last year. I can’t live without it now.
My Passport 1TB External Hard Drive A portable hard drive is absolutely essential for backing up everything. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I don’t trust my files, writing, and photos to a cloud that could disappear. I back up EVERYTHING on two hard drives. One travels with me and one stays at home. If I lose one it’s not the end of the world.
128GB Flash Drive I don’t travel (or work) anywhere without this flash drive. It’s perfect for sharing photos, and storing temporary files. When I was teaching full-time, I simply took this home at the end of the day rather than unplugging and lugging home my school-issued laptop.
SanDisk 32GB SD Card You can never have too many SD cards. This is the brand I’ve been using for years.
Altec Lansing Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker I honestly can’t say enough good things about this little ultra portable, ultra durable Bluetooth speaker. It’s water, sand, and impact resistant, plus it sounds ten times more expensive than it really is.
Thule 15″ MacBook Sleeve Even though this laptop case states it’s for a MacBook, it works for many other models. It is the best laptop case I’ve ever owned, plus it’s extremely rugged. Best Buy has them in stock if you want to try before you buy, but Amazon is cheaper. You won’t find anything else like it and you won’t be disappointed.

Essential Packing Gear

Osprey Porter 46 Backpack Sixteen years of travel and I can honestly say this is the best bag I’ve ever owned. The straps tuck away and you can carry it like a duffel bag.
5pc Packing Cube Set Packing cubes are a “must” if you want to avoid checking a bag.
Outlander Daypack My husband and I each have one of these day-packs. They’re the size of a deck of cards, and come in handy when you need extra space.
JanSport SuperBreak Backpack Joe and I each have a small Jansport backpack. They’re handy when you need a little more space and stability than the Outlander provides.
Microfiber Travel Towel I’ve had this microfiber towel since my Army days and it never stops coming in handy. Towel, sack, blanket, or padding, it has a ton of uses.
Camelbak Tactical Hydration Backpack w/ 3L Bladder My black Camelback has been with me almost a decade. It withstood a deployment to Iraq, three months of OCS training at Fort Benning, several Grand Canyon hikes, and numerous other trips. It still looks new! It’s extremely handy, and comes with a little extra storage space so you don’t need another daypack. This is a must-have if you dislike carrying around water bottles.

Health and Wellness on the Road

doTERRA Family Physician Kit and doTERRA Essential Oils Introductory Kit I am not a multi-level marketer, nor do I push these oils to family and friends. I do however use these oils EVERY time I travel. Lemon, Peppermint and On Guard for tea, Tea Tree oil for cuts and scrapes, Lavender for headaches and relaxation. Many times I’ve felt a cold coming on or a scratchy throat, and inhaling the steam from the tea sent the cold packing.
Dr. Teal’s Eucalyptus Epsom Salt Nothing soothes aches and pains like eucalyptus epsom salt. I take a bag with me wherever I go.
Earth Therapeutics Cotton/Silk Sleep Mask This is a very simple item and it’s one I can’t live without. I started using a sleep mask back in 2009, when I was deployed to Iraq. This mask plus a set of earplugs, made otherwise unbearable situations tolerable while traveling. I’ve tried them all, and this is the best one I’ve found. An absolute must if you want to sleep on the go.

Just for Fun

Fujifilm Instax Mini 50S Camera I’ve had this little instant (polaroid) type camera for two years. It’s loads of fun. You can take instant photos to give to your new friends on the road.
